Dear Members and Partners,

Let me urge you to attend our ICLEI World Congress 2009 “Connecting Leaders”, which will take place in Edmonton, Canada, from 14-18 June 2009. Whether you are Mayor or Councilor, Department Head or Environmental Coordinator – you would not want to miss the opportunity to meet and learn from your peers from other continents, to expose yourself to future urban scenarios, to engage in thought-provoking debates and to be part of a global group of cities that map out the path towards a sustainable future. Most importantly, this congress will connect local governments with leaders from research and development, NGOs and the business sector. Register today at www.iclei.org/worldcongress.
This year offers more opportunities for learning and engagement:

EcoProcura 2009 in Reykjavik, Island from 25-27 March 2009 is a platform to promote exchange amongst purchasers from all levels of governments, policy-makers, product designers, suppliers, manufacturers and multipliers – and an opportunity to exchange and learn about how sustainable procurement can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change.
Local Renewables 2009 conference in Freiburg, Germany from 27-29 April 2009 focuses on transforming our communities for the post-carbon age using renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy savings. The main themes will be urban planning for the post-carbon age; local policies for increasing the share of renewable energy, green buildings as a cornerstone of sustainable cities, and financing local renewables and energy efficiency.

There will be more events coming up this year, and ICLEI will be busy preparing for the United Nations climate conference COP-15 in Copenhagen in December. Together with our friends and colleagues from UCLG, Metropolis, C40 and the World Mayors Council on Climate Change as well as regional associations and networks of municipalities we will be advocating for a United Nations recognizing the role of cities and local authorities in climate change.
If your local government has set a target or made a commitment to a specific reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, please report details to ccp@iclei.org to be included in the world catalogue of city commitments to combat climate change.
I look forward to welcoming you in Edmonton,

Signature Mr. Otto-Zimmermann
