The Water Campaign
Water of adequate quantity and quality is central to the existence of every life form. Water resource management is necessary in ensuring the viability and sustainability of this finite resource. By working with local governments, ICLEI's Water Campaign is aimed at mainstreaming the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) Framework that upholds the efficient, equitable, and sustainable use of water. IWRM is a process that promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital eco-systems.

The ICLEI Water Campaign, launched in June 2000, provides local governments with a framework to support their unique local water government efforts.

The Water Campaign is based on a series of performance milestones that advocate the systematic identification and evaluation of water resource management challenges facing the local governments. The campaign identifies three Local Water Agendas for specific targeted action.

1. municipal operations
2. the urban community
3. the local watershed
