ICLEI took part in the foundation conference as guest. As the leading local government network on sustainable development, anticipates strong co-operation with IRENA in the rapid global deployment of renewable energy. Collaboration between ICLEI and IRENA can lead to strong links to local governments around the world in a short time.

All government levels must be involved a transformation to renewable energy

ICLEI can support IRENA in its work by facilitating strong relationships between its tasks and ICLEI’s network of over 1000 local governments worldwide”, states Cadman.

IRENA should recognise the role of local governments in Renewable Energy

ICLEI encourages IRENA to recognise the role of local governments as key actors in the transition to renewable energy and to build strong relations with the local level. Notably, ICLEI has developed the Local Renewables Initiative to supports and strengthens local governments in promoting sustainable energy  in the urban environment.
