Dr. Rajendra Pachauri share strategies with cities to reduce carbon emissions

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, the chair of the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change addressed the Local Governments Climate Sessions in Poznan, Poland. He is recognized as one of the lead scientist explaining to governments and policy-makers the relevance of adresing climate change urgently. Dr. Pachauri told cities that transport planning can be a key municipal contribution to reducing climate change. Particularly he stressed that 'Transportation has a rapid turn-over in terms of local investments, compared to buildings for example. Promoting sustainable mobility is an effective way for cities to reduce carbon emissions'

Local governments are committed to contribute their part: Mayors around the world are signing the World Mayors and Local Government Climate Agreement, committing themselves to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 60% from 1990 levels and by 80% from 1990 levels in industrialized countries.
