Poznan Local Government Climate Sessions, 9-11 December 2008

The sessions will follow the examples of previous local government events organised during UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COPs) (e.g. in 1995, 2005, 2006, 2007) and will constitute a relevant milestone in the Local Government Climate Roadmap; a process which seeks to achieve a strong post-2012 climate agreement that provides a solid framework for all actors to maximise their contribution to climate protection and adaptation to climate change, for local governments in particular as key actors in the process.

Local Governments Associations convening the event

The Sessions are  convened by the global partners of the Local Government Climate Roadmap which include UCLG, C40, WMCCC, ICLEI, and Metropolis, in cooperation with, and with support from, international, regional and national partner organisations. The Sessions are  facilitated by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, together with the Association of Polish Cities and the City of Poznan.

A dialogue between the local, national and international level

During the LGCS local government leaders will establish a dialogue between the local sphere of government and national and supranational levels of government, multilateral bodies and international organisations. Local government representatives will invite UN delegates to discuss the local government positions and to explain why and how local governments wish recognition as key actors for implementing CO2 reduction targets. The sessions will document the huge potential of local action as well as the required framework condition for increasing these activities even much further.
