ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors. The results have supported the development of guidelines, manuals and policies, built capacity, furthered partnerships, as well as ICLEI's advocacy work, especially at the global level.

The recently founded Urban Research Team in the Capacity Center at the ICLEI World Secretariat is one such extension. The Research Team supports the building, exchange and dissemination of knowledge and expertise in urban sustainability on a global scale. The Research Team aims to link the rich variety of expertise in, and activities and programs of, ICLEI Offices around the globe. Through more systematic approaches and exchanges around the world, research on urban sustainability will be extended, enhanced and furthered.

Bridging the gap between science and practice, and developing programs and projects towards this aim is among the major goals of ICLEI’s work. ICLEI has been continuously equipping its members, cities and local governments, and their associations, with latest news, and findings to advance their knowledge, drive innovation, and to build networks among excellence and pioneers. Research and analysis are paramount to stay current on the many fronts, identify new challenges and better solutions, design and develop new strategic and policy approaches.

Close contacts, exchange, and dialogs with science and research by linking to a network of researchers, universities and research institutes is significant. Almost all of ICLEI’s current work areas have been initiated through R&D projects including pioneering cities and researchers.
