Mayor Conference on Urban Biodiversity to be held May 2008

A Mayors Conference will be held 26-28 May 2008 as a parallel event to the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, in Bonn (Germany). This conference offers a unique opportunity for a selected group of local leaders to showcase good practices and express collective commitments for extending local action for biodiversity.  The conference also offers an opportunity to discuss national and international framework conditions needed to ensure urban biodiversity is protected, and to seek political and financial support for local action. As the Mayors Conference is in parallel to the High Level Segment of the Conference of Parties (COP) of the UN-CBD, local leaders will use this opportunity to have their voices heard by the international community through networking with key representatives from national governments and UN agencies.  An intervention on behalf of local governments will also be part of the High Level Segment.  Organized by ICLEI’s Local Action for Biodiversity project, the event is being supported by the city of Bonn (Germany).  Participants are invited by Lady Mayor Bärbel Dieckmann of Bonn.  Lady Mayor Dieckmann also serves as Chair of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change. The Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) Project was launched in 2006 by ICLEI and IUCN, the World Conservation Union.  Initiated by the cities of Cape Town and eThekwini (Durban), the project forms the first step in a broader ICLEI Biodiversity Programme.  LAB is pioneering through coordinating the sharing of experiences, successes and challenges from a diverse group of participant cities around the world.  For more information, please contact the Conference Secretariat based in ICLEI’s International Training Centre, at biodiv-bonn2008@iclei.org.
