Local Renewables Project extended in Bhubaneswar

The Local Renewables Model Communities Network Project in Bhubaneswar has been extended by another two years. The Project, being implemented with the active support of ICLEI, is working to reduce conventional energy consumption by using renewable energy sources.  The extension of the program would see several energy efficient measures implemented, including the use of solar energy in illuminating streets, parks, running campuses, buildings and traffic signals.
The Project has already resulted in the installation of a 200-litre solar water heater at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Hospital.   Another objective is to conduct an ‘energy audit’ on the Corporation of Bhubaneswar’s buildings.  Under the project survey, it was determined that there has been a 33.91 percent increase in residential electricity use over the last six years, and a 24.95 percent increase in commercial energy use. By March 2008, major lanes in Unit I and the premises of the Lingaraj Temple will be illuminated by solar panels.
