Public lighting toolbox in Australia goes national

A public lighting toolbox that was developed by the ICLEI Oceania Secretariat and the Australian Greenhouse Office is available to all local governments in Australia, and also to local governments in New Zealand.

Part of a national public lighting plan, it has been determined that use of the Toolbox could reduce energy use by 65 percent.  Public lighting bills for local governments in South Australia, in particular, range from US$ 20,400 to 1.3 million (AUS$ 75,000 to 1.5 million) per year.  Additionally, up to 70 percent of council’s greenhouse gas emissions come from streetlights.

“The new Sustainable Public Lighting Toolbox will provide councils with the information, tools and networks they need to take action on public lighting”, says Wayne Wescott, Chief Executive of the ICLEI Oceania Secretariat.
