Sustainable Public Procurement accelerating in Brazil and Argentina

The ICLEI Latin America and Caribbean Secretariat is actively promoting sustainable public procurement (SPP) in Brazil, and developing the necessary partnerships to expand into Argentina.

The Sustainable Public Procurement project (CPS for Compras Publicas Sustentaveis in Portuguese) involves three major governments in Brazil in a pioneering experience to foster sustainable public procurement policies and measures within the administration in the city of Sao Paulo, and the states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais.

In its initial phase, ICLEI LACS has conducted planning, adapting and framework activities to prepare partners and the pilot governments to execute the project activities.   A detailed workplan has been developed for the project that will guide the project successfully.

The following activities in Brazil and Argentina are being planned:

  • On 20 November, ICLEI LACS will hold a seminar on sustainable public procurement with the Environment Ministry of the city of Buenos Aires.
  • From 21-23 November, ICLEI LACS will lead a delegation from Brazil to participate as observers in pilot training on sustainable public procurement, developed by the Marrakesh Task Force for the Government of Argentina.
  • On 28 November, ICLEI LACS, together with the State Environment Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Fundacao Getulio Vargas will hold a Seminar on Sustainable Construction in Rio de Janeiro.  The event’s website is www2.fgv.br/app/mail_mkt/arq/2543.htm.
