ICLEI Executive Committee met 27-29 October in Jeju

The ICLEI Executive Committee held its annual series of meetings from 27 to 29 October 2007.

This year’s meetings, which were hosted by the Government of the Jeju Self-Governing Province in the Republic of Korea, also addressed the future role of local governments in the international effort to tackle climate change.

The Executive Committee Meeting brings together high-ranking local government decision-makers from around the world who provide their experience to ICLEI as Executive Committee members. The Executive Committee being the decision-making body of ICLEI Global, the meetings are an important event for the organization, setting the priorities for action for the next year to come.

This year, the deliberations focused, amongst other things, on the current and future role of local governments in the international negotiations on climate change. The negotiations will reach yet another decisive point in December 2007, when the UN Conference on Climate Change will take place in Bali, Indonesia.

The Executive Committee Meetings were scheduled back-to-back with the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Congress, which takes place from 28-31 October 2007 in Jeju. For this large local government event, ICLEI organized and facilitated a special session on ‘Solutions for the Sustainable Management of Cities & Towns’.

The meetings were jointly organized by the recently re-opened ICLEI Korea Office and the ICLEI World Secretariat. Important results of the meetings will be announced on this website.
