Mayor Mehra addresses the United Nations on Climate Change

The Mayor of Delhi, Ms Arti Mehra, today addressed leaders of all UN Members States on climate change, highlighting the critical role that local governments have played in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Mayor Mehra, in attending this high-level event convened by the Secretary General of the United Nations, joined over 150 political leaders from around the world, invited by the Secretary General to specifically address the leadership challenge of climate change.  Mayor Mehra was the only local government official at this important event, and she was in fact honoured to be one of the keynote speakers opening the day-long event.

In her presentation, Mayor Mehra spoke about how local authorities have taken consistent and large-scale action to both reduce existing and future emissions, while addressing present and immediate concerns or urban management.

Mayor Mehra called upon national governments to learn from the experiences of local governments, as the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have led to visible improvement in citizens’ lives.

The UN Secretary General has called for the forging of a coalition to accelerate a global response to climate change, a coalition that must engage all levels of government, and all sectors.
