ExecCom Member Mayol appointed to REN21 Steering Committee

ICLEI Executive Committee Member Ms Imma Mayol, Environmental Mayor of Barcelona (Spain), has been appointed a member of the Steering Committee of the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21). Environment Mayor Imma Mayol will from now on represent Local Government on this  Steering Committee. REN21 provides a forum for international leadership on renewable energy. Its goal is to bolster policy development for the rapid expansion of renewable energies in developing and industrialized economies. REN21 had reserved a seat for Local Governments in their global Steering Committee, which has now been filled by the appointment of Ms Mayol. United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) as nominating organization and ICLEI consulted and agreed that Barcelona – as one of the cities leading on the promotion of renewable energy – would be an excellent choice. Ms Mayol is also a Member of ICLEI’s Executive Committee, and is therefore best positioned to provide a united voice for local governments in the policy forum. Ms Mayol will, in particular, be able to present progress and findings of ICLEI's Local Renewables Model Communities project to the international audience assembled in REN21. ICLEI contributed to a municipal chapter of the REN21 global report for 2007, which will be issued in some weeks.
