Local Action for Biodiversity website launched

Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB), ICLEI’s new initiative on urban biodiversity management and conservation, has launched its web pages at www.iclei.org/lab. LAB aims at coordinating shared experiences, successes and challenges of diverse participant cities from around the world, exploring the best ways for local governments to engage in sustainable urban biodiversity management and conservation. LAB supports the globally recognized Countdown 2010 target of significantly reducing the rate of species extinctions by that date. It also focuses on the key role of local authorities in conserving the world’s biodiversity and retaining the relationship between people and nature. Cities participating in the LAB project include:  Barcelona (Spain); Bonn(Germany); Cape Town (South Africa); Durban (South Africa); Edmonton (Canada); Ekurhuleni (South Africa); Île de France (France); Johannesburg (South Africa); Joondalup (Australia); King County (U.S.A); Leicester (England); Liverpool (Australia); Nagoya (Japan); São Paulo (Brazil); Seoul (South Korea) ; Tilburg (The Netherlands) Waitakere (New Zealand) ; Walvis Bay (Namibia); Zagreb (Croatia). LAB participant cities are currently in the process of preparing Biodiversity Reports which will be discussed at LAB’s 2007 Workshop in October. The reports will also form the basis of the LAB Biodiversity Management Toolkit, a document drawing on the various experiences and views of all LAB cities, providing a valuable resource for biodiversity planning and implementation. The first newsletter of LAB will also soon be available; a link to it will be made available here on ICLEI’s website and on the LAB web pages. For further information, please see www.iclei.org/lab or email lab@iclei.org.
