Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

From 5 to 7 June, approximately 1,200 participants from 120 national governments, 64 United Nations agencies and 54 non-governmental organizations met in Geneva (Switzerland) for the First Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. Set up under UN’s International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (ISDR), the Global Platform has become the main global forum for exchange on disaster risk reduction for actors at the regional, national and sub-national level.  The aim of the Global Platform is to raise awareness on reducing disaster risk, share experience, and guide the ISDR system in supporting the implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015: Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters. The Global Platform was a significant event in promoting local government action for disaster risk reduction and resilience-building. At the side event ‘Reducing Disaster Risks and Building Resilience to Disasters in Cities’ chaired by UNDP, ICLEI’s Resilient Communities & Cities Initiative together with the Earthquake and Megacities Initiative (EMI) and other organizations launched the ‘Global Forum on Urban Risk’ as a means of joining forces for awareness raising and action for disaster risk reduction at the local government level. ICLEI has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with EMI. From ICLEI’s Resilient Communities & Cities Initiative Mr. Hartmut Fünfgeld spoke at the side event. Ms Violeta Seva, Senior Advisor to the Mayor from ICLEI Member Makati City (Philippines) contributed to the same session and also spoke in a plenary session. ICLEI’s Resilient Communities & Cities Initiative is aimed at mainstreaming disaster resilience in the planning and decision-making processes of local governments.
