ITC Director elected to the Advisory Board of Countdown 2010

Mrs. Monika Zimmermann, Director of ICLEI’s International Training Centre, was elected to the Advisory Board of Countdown 2010, an international initiative to halt biodiversity loss by 2010. The Brussels-based biodiversity conservation initiative Countdown 2010 held its annual Partners Assembly on 11 June 2007. In four workshops and several plenary sessions, the participants discussed strategies and concrete actions to move towards the 2010 target to halt biodiversity loss and called upon governments to report their achievements. ICLEI facilitated a workshop on ‘biodiversity as a local issue’. The gathering also featured the election of Countdown 2010’s new advisory board. ICLEI’s International Training Centre’s Director, Mrs Monika Zimmermann was elected for the new term. Her election exemplifies increased efforts to reach out to local governments in order to halt biodiversity loss. The Advisory Board’s role is to provide strategic guidance for the development of the initiative.  Her involvement represents the initiative’s mission to address biodiversity conservation at the local and regional level. Mrs. Zimmermann’s election comes at a time when the ITC is closely collaborating with Countdown 2010 on local action for biodiversity conservation and management. ICLEI, together with the European Centre for Nature Conservation (ECNC) has recently embarked on a new project called ‘Local and Regional Authorities for Biodiversity 2010’, which focuses on awareness raising and capacity building in biodiversity conservation for local governments and regional authorities. ICLEI also cooperates with Countdown 2010 in the ICLEI initiative ‘Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB)’. Speakers at the Partners Assembly included key international figures of biodiversity conservation such as Mr. Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, Mr. Tamas Marghescu, IUCN Regional Director for Europe, and Mr. Ladislav Miko, Director at the European Commission. From ICLEI’s International Training Centre, Mr. Hartmut Fünfgeld attended the meeting.
