The 10th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10), Aichi-Nagoya, 11 - 29 October  2010.

All 191 Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity will meet in Aichi-Nagoya in October 2010, a year that marks the UN International Year of Biodiversity, to review the international achievements to reduce biodiversity loss and establish new targets. The earth's diversity of habitat and species is being lost expeditiously, affecting mostly the poor areas.

The City of Nagoya will hold a commitment  towards achieving the 2010 Biodiversity Target and will also contribute its achievements to the global cities network Local Action for Biodiversity. COP 10 will be an important milestone for the Convention on Biological Diversity to implement its three main objectives:

  • conservation of biological diversity
  • sustainable use of its components
  • fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources

This Meeting will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, together with the MOP (Meeting of the Parties) attended by contracting parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, a supplementary agreement to the Convention on Biological Diversity that introduces an international framework for implementing appropiriate management and evaluation systems to maintain balance among ecosystems. This protocol came into effect in 2003, and as of the end of June 2009, 156 countries and regions were listed as parties to the protocol.
