Towards cleaner and healthier cities - Accelerating city to city exchange on sustainable sanitation
ICLEI - South Asia along with Ecosan Services Foundation (ESF), Pune are inviting you to the Conference “Towards Cleaner and Healthier Cities - Accelerating City to City Exchange on Sustainable Sanitation” taking place in New Delhi on 7 and 8 May 2013. The conference - closing event of the project “ACCESSanitation” - is of special relevance to local government officials who are interested in developing city sanitation plans.

The overall objective of the conference is to provide a platform for local governments, practitioners and funding agencies to learn from each other and exchange their experiences in sustainable urban sanitation. The event is also for sharing the outcomes of the project ACCESSanitation which has been implemented with support from EuropeAid of the European Commission and the Indian Ministry of Urban Development in ten cities in India and the Philippines. Apart from ICLEI South Asia and ESF, implementing partners are Xavier University in the Philippines and the ICLEI regional secretariats in Europe, Southeast Asia and Africa.

Local governments @ COP18
Former San Fernando La Union Mayor Mary Jane Ortega elected as ICLEI Vice President
ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat is proud to announce that Mary Jane Ortega was elected as one of three ICLEI Vice Presidents during the Global Executive  Committee (GexCom) meeting held in Seoul, Korea last October 18, 2012.

The Global Executive Committee elected its future leadership for the 2012-2015 term during this meeting. Incumbent ICLEI President David Cadman was unanimously re-elected for a third term. Mexico City’s Minister of Environment Martha Delgado Peralta was re-elected as First Vice President, while eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Durban) Mayor James Nxumalo and CityNet Secretary General Mary Jane Ortega were elected as Vice Presidents.

As Vice President, Mary Jane Ortega will support President Cadman in representing ICLEI and its work globally.

Mary Jane Ortega served as the Mayor of San Fernando, La Union Philippines for three terms (1998-2007) and has received numerous awards during her period in office.  Concurrently, she is also serving as a member of the Regional Executive Committee for ICLEI Southeast Asia and representative to the  GexCom. She currently holds the thematic portfolio for ADB.  Mary Jane Ortega is also a member of the World Mayor’s Council on Climate Change, and currently Secretary General of CityNet, an international organization of more than 100 member cities and local governments committed to helping local governments improve the sustainability of human settlements.
ICLEI World Congress 2012, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 14 - 18 June 2012
Held every 3 years, the world congress gathers local government and world leaders to take up the charge to sustainability. The event will take place just days before the Rio+20 Conference in neighboring Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marking two decades since the adoption of Agenda 21.

Earth Hour search is on for urban climate champion
Cities in Canada, India, Italy, Sweden and the United States are invited this year to participate in an Earth Hour City Challenge. They are urged to report energy reduction targets and achievements to the cCCR, an internationally recognized carbon reporting platform for cities, managed by ICLEI.  Read more...
Global Climate Community releases city-scale emissions accounting standard for public comment
ICLEI and C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group have released a draft edition of the Global Protocol for Community-scale Greenhouse Gas Emissions to help cities measure and report GHG emissions using a more consistent protocol. We invite public comments on the draft until 20 April. Read more...
ICLEI, UN-HABITAT and European Comission join forces to promote lower-emission city growth
UN-Habitat and the European Commission (EC) have signed an agreement to begin a new project that encourages cities to lower their emissions as they grow. ICLEI is the main implementing partner. Read more...
Local governments @ COP17
In 2010, local and subnational governments achieved a breakthrough in global climate advocacy by being recognized "governmental stakeholders".

This year, at the United Nations climate conference (COP17/CMP7) in Durban, South Africa on 28 November – 9 December, the Local Government Climate Forum consist of events aimed at ensuring that local and subnational governments are appropriately engaged and empowered in the design and implementation of the global climate regime.

Global Advocacy

At the Global Advocacy front, the Local Governments and Municipal Authorities constituency (LGMA), lead by ICLEI as the focal point to the UNFCCC, are engaging through:
  • Daily briefings

  • Delivering interventions and inputs to UNFCCC negotiation text

  • Participating in high level events

Durban LG Convention

ICLEI, in its capacity as the LGMA focal point to UNFCCC, has also partnered with Durban to host the Durban Local Governments Convention: adapting to a changing climate - towards COP17/CMP7 and beyond on 2-4 December 2011.

The carbonn Cities Climate Registry launches in Mexico City
The carbonn Cities Climate Registry (cCCR), launched at the World Mayors Summit on Climate hosted by Mexico City's Mayor Marcelo Ebrard on 21st November 2010, allows cities around the world to report their local climate action to a central platform, run by local governments for local governments.

Bohol Municipalities Jumpstarts DReAMS project

Växjö and Bologna support Asian cities in adopting ecoBUDGET
The Development of Resources and Access to Municipal Services for South- and Southeast Asian Local Authorities (Realising DReAMS) project was launched at a meeting from 24 -26 February 2010 in the Province of Bohol (Philippines).  The project brings ICLEI European members Växjö and Bologna, five Asian local authorities from five different countries, and the Asian, European and Southeast Asian ICLEI Secretariats together. ICLEI SEA Secretariat gets Accredited as a Training Institution
One of the paramount accomplishments for 2005 of the ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat is its accreditation as a licensed training institution by the Philippine Civil Service Commission in September 2005. This accreditation recognizes the mission of ICLEI-SEA and the quality of service it has provided over the years. It allows the SEA Secretariat to run training programs in partnership with, among others, the national agencies and local governments. Aside from training programs in collaboration with ICLEI’s International Training Center (ITC) based in Germany, this latest feat will allow the SEA Secretariat to further navigate the local, national and international networks within the region.
