Dispatch from Africa
May 25, 2009
Africa Day should be a day that all Africans affirm a continued commitment to unite and work together towards global environmental issues, such as climate change and biodiversity conservation.
Because two thirds of the world’s biodiversity lies in Africa, this day gives African countries an opportunity to share experiences and consolidate efforts to meet conservation and development targets, such as the Biodiversity 2010 target of the CBD.
Support for such initiatives in Africa will ensure the mitigation of impacts that cause continued loss of biodiversity and will encourage actions on the ground that protect ecosystems and ensure that the richness of Africa’s biodiversity is sustained for the benefit of future generations.
