Webcast of ICLEI event at Bonn Climate Talk

March 30, 2009

The future role of local governments in the next climate agreement was discussed on 2 April within the scope of the Bonn Climate Talk 2009. It can be viewed online at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat at www.unfccc.int.

Local governments seek a strong partnership with national governments on the next global agreement on climate change. With this objective local governments presented a draft decision on “Cities, Local Authorities and Climate Change” to the United Nations in December 2008.  It will hopefully be adopted next December in Copenhagen at COP15, the key international meeting to determine the successor of the Kyoto Protocol.

Through the 'Local Governments Climate Roadmap' cities worldwide are mobilizing to have their role recognized in climate protection and are asking for better framework conditions in the respective countries.  The meeting was a platform of exchange and dialogue of local governments with representatives of the parties as well as with international experts.

Mr. Gino van Begin, ICLEI Deputy Secretary General and Regional Director for Europe, Mr. Ronan Dantec, Vice-President, Communauté Urbaine Nantes, France, and Chair of the Climate Change Working Group, Eurocities and Mr. Henning Jensen, Mayor of Naestved, and Chairman, Local Government Denmark's International Committee presented overviews of local government climate change initiatives.

Mr. Ian Cochran, from Mission Climat de la Caisse des Dépôts, France, in affiliation with the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, and Mr. Kaveh Zahedi, Climate Change Coordinator of the United Nations Environment Programme contributed their expertise.

The event will be facilitated by Mr. Yunus Arikan, Manager of ICLEI Cities Climate Center and will be webcast live by the UNFCCC Secretariat at www.unfccc.int.
