Improvements to Anyang River in Uiwang City

October 17, 2007

A purification project in Uiwang City (Korea) took place recently to solve water pollution problems in the river.

The goals of the project were to be eliminate the sources of pollution in the Anyang River, to restore the ecosystem to that of a natural river, to create a water friendly environment, and to maintain clean water quality.

Steps in the project included the dredging of sludge accumulation, installation of a natural embankment, the planting of local vegetation, and the construction of bicycle paths and a walkway.

Cleanup of the river takes place annually on Environment Day, led by students and citizen’s groups.

Because local government is tasked with service provision and ensuring that social and economic development needs within the carrying capacity of the biological resource base, local government is an important manager of global biodiversity. ICLEI has established the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project to explore the best ways for local governments to engage in effective biodiversity protection, utilization and management. For more information on LAB, please visit www.iclei.org/biodiversity.

Uiwang City is one of 32 local governments in Korea that are currently Members of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.   For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Korea, please visit www.iclei.org/korea.
