Ulsan working with businesses to reduce pollutants

September 19, 2007

Ulsan City (Korea) has worked with local businesses since 2000 to reduce the release of pollutants and improve the environment.

The ‘Voluntary Environmental Management Agreement’ was first established in 2000, signing on 174 companies.  This was the first-ever initiative of its kind in all of Korea, and the companies invested $US 165 million (KRW 153.5 billion) by 2002 in improvements.

For the second phase, 48 companies participated between the years 2004-2006, investing $US 224 million (KRW 206.3 billion) to improve their facilities.  During Phase Three of the Agreement, $US 348 million (KRW 321 billion) will be invested over the five-year period of 2006 to 2010, anticipated to reduce 23 percent of all pollutants emitted by companies in Ulsan City.  This percentage equals 23,000 tons of the major pollutants nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and fine particles.

Since Ulsan City signed the ‘Voluntary Environment Management Agreement’, other cities have established similar agreements in their jurisdictions.

More and more cities are facing the need to mitigate climate change while already adapting to the changes brought about by climate change.  ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP) Campaign is an innovative international campaign that helps local government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment.   And now, the CCP Campaign is launching the Adaptation Initiative, building capacity for climate change impacts at the local level.  For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.

Ulsan City is one of 32 local governments in Korea that are currently Members of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Korea, please visit www.iclei.org/korea.
