Manizales to showcase Biomanizales

September 12, 2007

In December 2007, Manizales (Colombia) will host the Meeting of IberoAmerican Cities for Sustainability.

At this meeting, to which municipalities, towns, cities, universities, institutions, community organizations, and ngo’s in the field of sustainability at the local level are all invited, Manizales will showcase Biomanizales.

Biomanizales has been declared as the Best Practice of Shared Management for Urban Sustainability.  Biomanizales was adopted as the environmental policy of the city since 1995 as a local plan of action for the city for a sustainable and concerted future for the city.

The events, projects and activities generated by Biomanizales followed the principles of Agenda 21, whereby partners all shared in the development, responsibilities and leadership of the municipal development plan.

Biomanizales addresses, among others, the sustainable use of available natural resources to promote tourism and recreation (biotourism), sustainable urban transportation, eco parks, and the integral handling of waste.

ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Campaign promotes a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that supports local governance by identifying local sustainability priorities and mobilizing local governments and their citizens to implement long-term action plans that address these sustainable priorities. Using the LA21 approach of participatory sustainable development planning, ICLEI aims to assist local authorities to move beyond general sustainable development planning and to apply this approach in tackling areas of priority concern. Manizales is one of 23 local governments in Latin America that are currently Members of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in the Latin America and Caribbean Region, please visit www.iclei.org/lacs.
