Partnership in Asheville underway to protect the climate

September 04, 2007

The city of Asheville (U.S.A.) and the Warren Wilson College have agreed to work together to protect the climate. The agreement is believed to be the first such partnership between a city and a college. In January, Warren Wilson College signed a letter of intent for the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, an initiative modeled after the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement.  Warren Wilson and the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill were the first schools in the state of North Carolina to sign their commitment to make campuses more sustainable and to help address climate change. In May 2007, Asheville City Council unanimously approved the partnership concept.  The collaboration is expected to include actions such as the exchange of best practices for monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions; the development of educational resources; and the use of Warren Wilson College as a demonstration site.“The partnership makes sense”, said Mayor Bellamy. “The city and college share a common concern about the scope of global warming, and we share a belief in the power of community to overcome this challenge.”More and more cities are facing the need to mitigate climate change while already adapting to the changes brought about by climate change.  ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP) Campaign is an innovative international campaign that helps local government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment.   And now, the CCP Campaign is launching the Adaptation Initiative, building capacity for climate change impacts at the local level.  For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.Asheville is one of 204 local governments in the U.S.A. that are currently Members of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in the U.S.A., please go to www.iclei.org/usa.Source:  “Asheville mayor, Warren Wilson president work to stop climate change”, Asheville Citizen-Times, 7 August 2007.
