New game reserve for Nelson Mandela Bay

September 04, 2007

A new large-scale conservation area in the northern suburbs of Nelson Mandela Bay (South Africa) will run on the principles of long-term sustainable development.

The reserve will rehabilitate, protect and conserve an area that has been identified as an important local site for the achievement of local, regional and global biodiversity objectives.  Although large tracts of land in this area are still in good ecological condition, it is also under growing pressure from the spread of alien plants; poaching of game with packs of hunting dogs; frequent fires; the illegal dumping of domestic, building and medical waste; over-grazing by livestock; and quarrying.

By establishing a nature/game reserve in this area, the developers will be using the land in a sustainable fashion.  Further benefits include the boosting of eco-tourism in the form of game drives and guided walks.  Other associated opportunities that will flow from these activities, such as tourist amenities and reserve/game management operations, will provide employment opportunities for the surrounding communities.

It is anticipated that fencing of the designated area will take place this month (September 2007).

Because local government is tasked with service provision and ensuring that social and economic development needs within the carrying capacity of the biological resource base, local government is an important manager of global biodiversity. ICLEI has established the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project to explore the best ways for local governments to engage in effective biodiversity protection, utilization and management. For more information on LAB, please visit www.iclei.org/biodiversity.

Nelson Mandela Bay is one of 32 local governments in Africa that are currently Members of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Africa, please go to www.iclei.org/africa.
