Efficient landscape audits offered in York Region

August 08, 2007

York Region (Canada) offers free landscape audits to residents every May to encourage water efficiency.

A landscape advisor visits the home, inspects the lawn and garden, and provides advice on how to reduce the water demands of the landscape.

The audit is personalized to the needs of that particular landscape, so the advisors also provide advice on adding more colour to gardens, filling in shady areas, and getting rid of pests.

To further help residents get started, residents who have a water efficiency landscape audit receive a water-wise gardening kit that includes plant lists, gardening fact sheets, a rain gauge, plant seeds, and discount coupons from participating gardening centres, among other items.

ICLEI has an international freshwater Water Campaign that aims to build the capacity of local governments to reduce water consumption and improve local water quality. For more information on ICLEI’s Water Campaign, please visit www.iclei.org/water.

York Region is one of 17 local governments in Canada that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in Canada, please visit www.iclei.org/canada.
