Ube City wins national sustainability award

May 30, 2007

Ube City (Japan) received one of eight awards presented by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment for sustainable, symbiotic and participatory approaches to sustainable development.

These annual awards are presented to municipalities that have achieved outstanding results in community-based sustainable development Ube City won the award for the following three initiatives:

The implementation of integrated environmental conservation policies, including anti-pollution measures, waste management and recyling, and tree planting and maintenance.  Ube City has consistently engaged various sectors in the establishment of these policies, including industry, government, academe and citizens all working in collaboration.

The establishment of eco-friendly agreements with main businesses in Ube City, resulting in 19 businesses reducing their carbon dioxide emissions by 800,000 tons (based on 2005 levels.)

The creation of a research working group to consider energy efficiency and how to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  21 local businesses, the technical college and the local university are all collaborating in this working group to implement projects on co-generation projects.

ICLEI’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) Campaign promotes a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that supports local governance by identifying local sustainability priorities and mobilizing local governments and their citizens to implement long-term action plans that address these sustainable priorities. Using the LA21 approach of participatory sustainable development planning, ICLEI aims to assist local authorities to move beyond general sustainable development planning and to apply this approach in tackling areas of priority concern.
