Energy Challenge made in Belfast
March 26, 2008
The Energy and Climate Committee of Belfast (<st1:state w:st="on">Maine</st1:state>, <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.A.</st1:place></st1:country-region>) has issued an energy challenge to promote conservation and fight climate change.
The Committee hopes that issuing a monthly challenge will spur residents to understand the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, playing a part in mitigating global climate change.
The challenge for the month of February was for city residents to lower the temperature in their homes or apartments by 5 degrees on 24 February for the whole day, compensating by wearing warmer clothing. Doing so would save money and energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and demonstrate that keeping the body warm does not mean keeping the entire house warm.
Residents who accept the energy challenge are asked to sign up by contacting the committee. A report of the participation and results are then publicized after each monthly challenge. One lucky participant in the February challenge won an assortment of compact fluorescent bulbs for their participation.
Working through the ICLEI USA Office, <st1:city w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Belfast</st1:place></st1:city> hopes at some point to develop a computer model indicating how much greenhouse gas the entire city produces over the course of a year.
More and more cities are facing the need to mitigate climate change while already adapting to the changes brought about by climate change. ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP) Campaign is an innovative international campaign that helps local government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment. And now, the CCP Campaign is launching the Adaptation Initiative, building capacity for climate change impacts at the local level. For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.
