Nagpur Municipal Corporation Celebrates National Renewable Energy Day with ICLEI South Asia

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) celebrated “Akshay Urja Diwas” (National Renewable Energy Day) on 20th August 2008 along with Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), Government of Maharashtra and ICLEI South Asia at R.P. Samarth Stadium (Chitanis Park).

Dignitaries Present for Celebration

Several dignitaries were present, including Honourable Ministers, Shri. Satish Chaturvedi and Shri Anees Ahmed, Honourable Deputy Mayor Shri Kishore Kumariya and Honourable Additional Commissioner, NMC, Shri Atul Patne.

Sustainable Energy

A Sadbhavana Rally was organized in which school children participated, displaying banners and posters on energy conservation and the importance of renewable energy. Visual presentations included posters, banners, hoardings and products related to renewable energy displayed by NMC, ICLEI South Asia, GTZ, and various local businesses. 


The importance of conventional energy resources was explained to the participating children. NMC organized a cultural programme and several competitions for the school children related to non-conventional energy resources.  A prize distribution ceremony followed where winners were awarded with a cash prize, along with mementos and certificates. ICLEI SA contributed solar lanterns and solar caps for the 1st and 2nd prize winners.  About twenty thousand students participated in the competitions.
