Integrated Urban Water Management Meeting in Belo Horizonte (Brazil)

January 08, 2009

From 30 Nov. to 4 Dec. 2008, some 50 researchers and other professionals in the water sector were able to enjoy the generous hospitality of the Municipality of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, while attending a series of lectures and workshops organised in cooperation with the University of Minas Gerais. The experts investigated options for enhancing sustainability in urban water management while focussing on the potential of Learning Alliances as an innovative methodology for action research.

The activity was part of the global initiative SWITCH – Managing Water in the City of the Future (www.switchurbanwater.eu). SWITCH is a global consortium of more than 30 universities and other organisations all around the world, among them also ICLEI’s International Training Centre. Part-financed by Directorate-General Research of the European Commission, the project runs from 2006 to 2011.

SWITCH aims at developing sustainable urban water systems through a combination of research, technological development, demonstration activities and training within a Learning Alliance framework. Learning Alliances are stakeholder platforms designed to break down barriers to information sharing, thus speeding up the process of uptake and innovation.
