São Paulo Draft Policy on Climate Change ready for comment

April 09, 2008

The State of São Paulo (Brazil) has completed its draft policy on climate change, and is now asking for public comment on the strategy.

The State Policy on Climate Change (SPCC) represents the commitment of São Paulo for the challenge of global climate change, both for the present and future generations, adapting to the new impacts and mitigating emissions of greenhouse gases, having as a primary objective to contribute to achieve stabilization.

The Policy follows the principles of precautionary, prevention, user-pays and polluter pays, participation of civil society, principles of sustainable development, and common but differentiated responsibilities, among others.

More and more cities are facing the need to mitigate climate change while already adapting to the changes brought about by climate change.  ICLEI’s Cities for Climate Protection® (CCP) Campaign is an innovative international campaign that helps local government and their communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their impact on the environment.   And now, the CCP Campaign is launching the Adaptation Initiative, building capacity for climate change impacts at the local level.  For more information, please visit www.iclei.org/ccp.

São Paulo is one of 12 local governments in Brazil that are currently Members of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.  For more information on ICLEI and its activities in the Latin America and Caribbean Region, please visit the ICLEI LACS Secretariat at www.iclei.org/lacs.
