ICLEI Southeast Asia hosts Seminar on Sustainability Management
July 05, 2006
Thirty participants representing local governments in the Philippines attended the three-day seminar, ‘Sustainability Management: Tools to Localize National Environmental Laws’ on June 14-16, 2006.
As the ICLEI Southeast Asia Office is accredited by the Philippine Civil Service Commission as a training institution, the seminar aimed to provide local governments with sustainability management tools, and provide them with a deeper understanding and appreciation of building sustainable communities while protecting global common goods.
The participants were introduced to Local Agendas to protect global common goods, options for sustainable livelihood and employment, sustainability implementation instruments, and accessing resources for sustainability management. Mr. Edmund A. Guillen, Environment Officer for the Province of Laguna, remarked that, “Attending the seminar made me realize that there are so many tools to be learned and things to be done to make the province sustainable.”
The seminar also highlighted the accomplishments of Philippine local authorities that have been engaged in various ICLEI Campaigns through the years. Bohol Province presented its ecoBUDGET, Dagupan City presented on Local Agenda 21 and Resilience, Cebu City presented on the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign, and Baguio City presented on sustainable water governance.
