ICLEI Hosting Events at WUF3

June 15, 2006

ICLEI was invited by UN-HABITAT to have an active role at the third World Urban Forum. WUF III is taking place in Vancouver, Canada from June 19-23, 2006, and this year's theme is 'Sustainable Cities - Turning Ideas into Action'.

 

"Planning and Managing Sustainable Cities: From Research to Practice" - a roundtable discussion organized by UN-HABITAT and the European Commission DG Research, with ICLEI as one of its partners. Presenting will be ICLEI's ITC Director, Monika Zimmermann.

 

"Sustainable Cities: PLUS Network - Partners for Long-Term Urban Sustainability" - this is a networking event organized by the International Centre for Sustainable Cities. This session will be facilitated by Secretary General Konrad Otto-Zimmermann.

 

"How to Integrate Environmental Aspects in City Long-Term Strategic Planning" - a networking event organized by the Cities Alliance, UNEP and ICLEI, to engage mayors and city practitioners on the tools and best practices for integrating environmental aspects into long-term strategic planning. Leading discussions will be ICLEI's International Membership and Knowledge Officer Ewa Ciuk, and ICLEI Members Hyderabad (India) and Cape Town (South Africa). "Energy: Local Action, Global Impact" - a roundtable discussion organized by UNEP with a presentation on ICLEI's Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign delivered by Lady Mayor Mary Jane Ortega of San Fernando La Union (Philippines). Lady Mayor Ortega is a Member of ICLEI's Executive Committee, the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, and the UN Advisory Committee of Local Authorities.

 

"Global Issues, Local Actions - The Global Footprint of Cities" - in this networking session organized by UN-HABITAT, UNEP and ICLEI, participants and discussion leaders will be responding to the question of how we can strengthen the linkages between the global environmental issues of climate change and biodiversity, and local concerns and actions. Leading the discussions will be ICLEI President and Vancouver Councillor David Cadman, as well as ICLEI Members San Fernando la Union (Philippines), Cape Town (South Africa), and Calgary (Canada).
