ICLEI supports Carbon Expo, 26 - 29 May 2009
May 19, 2009
Carbon Expo is a specialist Trade Fair and Conference that serves as the global meeting point for carbon trade and one of the most important international platforms for an exchange of information on latest developments in carbon markets.
CARBON EXPO 2009 is being jointly organized for the sixth time in succession by the World Bank, IETA (International Emissions Trading Association), Fira Barcelona and Koelnmesse GmbH on 27-29 May 2009 in Barcelona, Spain.
This year's program will be articulated around nine plenary sessions and four CARBON EXPO Workshop streams: Project stream, Traders stream, New Markets stream and Cities & Carbon Finance stream.
A special emphasize on cities is one of the most unique features of the CARBON EXPO 2009 since the role of carbon markets in mitigating urban greenhouse gas emissions will be discussed in details with representatives of business community and local governments.
Thus, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) are the two networks of local governments that are involved as supporting organizations of Carbon Expo 2009. Within this scope, UCLG and ICLEI will share a joint stand which primarily focus on the promotion of the Local Government Climate Roadmap on the way to COP15 in Copenhagen in December 2009. Members of ICLEI will also find the possibility of accessing to the fair events by a reduced fee.
Prior to Carbon Expo 2009, the symposium “Cities, Carbon Finance and Change; elements for a Cities Led-Agenda on the Road to Copenhagen“, organized by the Government of Spain, the City Council of Barcelona and the World Bank will be held on Tuesday, 26 May 2009 in Barcelona. Mr. Konrad Otto-Zimmermann, Secretary General of ICLEI, will co-chair the session on elements of a cities agenda in preparation for a future climate protection regime: finance, technology, capacity development.
Similarly, Mr. Yunus Arikan, Manager of ICLEI Cities Climate Center is invited as a kenote speaker at the Conference session on “Creating Urban Carbon Assets: From concepts to action“ that will take place on Thursday, 28 May 2009.
Further information on the programme and conditions of participation to the Carbon Expo 2009 can be found at www.carbonexpo.com.
Participation of ICLEI at the Carbon Expo 2009 is considered as one of the initial steps of a possible long term collaboration between ICLEI and World Bank through World Bank Institute and Carbon Finance Assist Programme, which aims to explore opportunities for a more enhanced and appropriate utilization of carbon funds in financing mitigation of urban greenhouse gases globally.
