ICLEI Roadmap
The Roadmap was launched in the closing plenary of the Local Government Climate Sessions held in Bali in December 2007 in parallel to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 14).

Local Government Climate Roadmap

December 04, 2008

In parallel to the process of developing the UN Roadmap, to move towards a post-Kyoto framework on climate change, a core group of local government associations together with cities around the world are driving the Local Government Climate Roadmap. This is a process of engagement of cities and local governments, and of reinforcement of their important role in climate protection.

Local Governments linking the national and local level

As the closest government level to citizens, mayors and their local administrations are critical when it comes to accelerating behavioural change within their community and to drive and implement effective actions. If genuinely empowered and resourced, local governments have tremendous potential to achieve substantial GHG reductions in their local areas. They are essential partners to national governments to ensure that global and ambitious reduction targets are met.

Aim of the Roadmap: recognize the role of local governments

The central aims of the Local Government Climate Roadmap are to ensure that local governments gain recognition of their key role in climate protection, that they are provided with the necessary legal, institutional and public competencies, and that they advocate for a strong post-Kyoto agreement.

A broad partnership of institutions

United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Metropolis, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, the C40 Climate Leadership Group, and the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC), in conjunction with their regional and national associations, networks and partners, have embarked on this roadmap – feeding into the Bali-Poznan-Copenhagen Roadmap.

Geneva Climate Symposium

Upcoming events this year that will be key elements in this process are the Geneva Climate Roadmap Symposium and the Local Government Climate Sessions in Poznan during the COP14.
