New project RESPIRO is launched

March 28, 2007

In partnership with EUROCITIES, ICLEI has started working on a new project called RESPIRO – Responsibility in Procurement. RESPIRO aims to encourage an exchange of experiences in including social and ethical requirements in procurement actions both between public and private sector purchasers and potential suppliers.

Two sectors have been selected for particular attention are:

  • Construction – as Europe’s largest industrial employer, efforts to promote CSR principles such as healthy and safe working conditions and combating against black market labour can have a significant impact on a great many people.
  • Textiles and Clothing – a sector under high pressure from global competition where CSR principles such as quality employment can help to profile European industry.

The Project will include expert (multi-stakeholder) meetings to discuss new European standards and guidance for construction, textiles and clothing, and a large European conference to widely disseminate the results of the Project.

For more information on RESPIRO and your city’s potential participation, please contact the Sustainable Procurement Project Assistant, Ms Marta Anglada, at iclei-europe@iclei-europe.org.
