ICLEI South Asia started Energy Efficiency – CDM project in 14 cities of Madhya Pradesh

March 14, 2007

ICLEI South Asia has collaborated with the Environmental Planning Coordination Organization (EPCO), Bhopal, to start an energy efficiency clean development mechanism (CDM) project in the 14 municipal corporations of Madhya Pradesh.

An agreement was signed between ICLEI and EPCO on 9 February 2007 at Jabalpur on the occasion of a mayors’ conference. The agreement was signed in the presence of Mr Jayant Maliya, Minister of Urban Development, Government of Madhya Pradesh, and the respective mayors of each of the cities. The proposed CDM project will result in many benefits for the participating cities, including a massive reduction in their energy bills through increases in the efficiency of the 14 cities’ water pumping and street lighting systems.

As part of the project ICLEI South Asia participated in four regional workshops on CDM in Bhopal, Ujjain, Gwalior and Indore from December 2006 to February 2007.

A two-day workshop was jointly organized by ICLEI and EPCO in Pachmadhi on 26-27 February attended by 28 engineers from concerned cities and EPCO staff. Participants were introduced to the basics of climate change, the CDM project, ICLEI’s CCP Campaign, and GHG emission reduction action plans. Later in the day intensive discussions about data requirements for the proposed CDM project were held . The next day city engineers were given hands-on training on ICLEI’s HEAT software.

The keynote speakers at the workshop were Mr. S.K. Joshi, Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests, Mr. Lokendra Thakkar, EPCO Project Director, Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director of ICLEI-South Asia, Mr. Anurag Mishra, Project Manager of ICLEI-South Asia, and Mr Ramesh Juvekar, Energy Audit Expert.
