Delhi recognized as ICLEI’s 500th Member

February 21, 2007

At a special ceremony in Kyoto City, Japan, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was formally recognized as the 500th Member of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability.

The ceremony took place at the opening of the Kyoto Conference on Climate Change, where Mayor Farhad Suri of Delhi met with over 50 local governments from Africa, Europe, North America and the Asia Pacific region to discuss regional partnerships and to showcase best practices. These local governments active in climate change came together for 2.5 days to discuss strategies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste and transportation management, and international mechanisms.

Delhi, the capital of India, is one of the fastest growing cities in Asia. As a result, it intimately faces key issues such as environmental health, power and water shortages, air and water pollution, and traffic congestion.

Delhi will engage with other ICLEI Members working towards sustainability by protecting global common goods through ICLEI’s various campaigns and programs managed by the South Asia Secretariat. One of these will be the Cities for Climate Protection® Campaign, underway in India since 2001 and currently working with 17 cities in various regions of the country.

Upon receiving the award, Mayor Suri expressed his pleasure at being part of the growing network of local governments that are committed to building sustainable communities. He then expressed his desire to recruit other local governments in India to become Members of ICLEI, a comment very much welcomed by ICLEI’s President, Mr. David Cadman.
