February 04, 2013

Gino Van Begin succeeded Konrad Otto-Zimmermann as ICLEI Secretary General in January 2013. To mark this occasion various UN agencies and heads have sent their congratulations and felicitations to the new Secretary General.

Margareta Wahlstön, Special Representative of the Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)

“Please accept my congratulations on your appointment as Secretary General at ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability. The UNISDR stands ready to continue its fruitful collaboration with ICLEI to advance the cause of local governments and sustainability in the years ahead.”

Christina Figueres, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

“My special thanks and appreciation go to Mr. Otto-Zimmermann for the excellent cooperation which he upheld over many years with the secretariat and for his commitment and active contribution to our cause, accentuating the important inter-linkages between sustainable urban development and climate change. We at the secretariat wish him well in his future endeavors. I have no doubt that we can continue to count on his successor, Mr. Gino van Begin, as a reliable and cooperative partner in the climate change negotiation process and likewise congratulate him and wish him well for a successful future.”

Achim Steiner, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)

“Let me extend to you my congratulations and best wishes. I hope and trust that the excellent relationship between our organizations provides a solid basis for accelerating transformative change ‘on the ground’.”
