World Disaster Reduction Day

Coinciding with the World Disaster Reduction Day, ICLEI’s Resilient Cities organized a webinar focusing on the importance of co-operation between cities in order to share knowledge and resources on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The webinar is part of the ICLEI Resilient Cities Webinar Series.
ICLEI Member Makati City, who is also a member of the Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR), and is working in cooperation with ICLEI Members, Quito (Ecuador) and Kathmandu (Nepal), shared knowledge and expertise amongst city officials on DRR during the webinar. Our speaker was Atty Violeta Somera Seva from the city of Makati who outlined the GFDRR project and provided examples.

The United Nations has also released a statement observing World Disaster Reduction Day. According to the release this year’s observance of the International Day for Disaster Reduction seeks to highlight the need for women and girls to be at the forefront of reducing risk and managing the world’s response to natural hazards.
They also stated that “On this International Day for Disaster Reduction, let us recognize that, as the theme of this year’s observance declares, women and girls are the “[in]Visible Force of Resilience”.
