World Mayors Summit on Climate Change, Nantes 2013

The summit will be held under the patronage of Mr. François Hollande, President of the Republic of France and with the participation of the French Prime Minister, Mr. Jean-Marc Ayrault

Why we meet

The ongoing fight against climate change is one of the greatest challenges cities face. Cities therefore play an integral role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and implementing climate adaptation strategies.

Cites are the cornerstone for implementing local action through planning and policy making. Innovative projects on urban transportation, solid waste management, lighting and energy efficiency, water pumping and storage have been pioneered by cities around the world. However to fully realize the potential to deliver local climate action, we need access to global financing mechanisms, partnership at all levels of government and collaboration with the private sector.

The World Mayors Summit on Climate Change consists of four major events:

·        27 September:  A high-level dialogue on financing local climate action, with the participation of representatives of financing institutions as well as experts;

·        27 September:  Gala dinner designed for networking and discussion; and

·        28 September:  Declaration Ceremony of the World Mayors Summit on Climate Change 2013, Nantes on advancing local climate action in light of the UNFCCC COP in 2015, in Paris/ France, with the participation of the H.E. Jean-Marc Ayrault, Prime Minister of France.

·        28 September:  General Assembly of the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, preceded by the Special Forum with Dr. Naoko Ishii, CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF); and followed by a reception hosted by Dr. Ishii.

The Nantes 2013 World Mayors Summit on Climate Change will enable cities to demonstrate leadership and commitments to the international community and will identify gateways for cities to access global financing mechanisms for local climate action.
