Cities for Climate Protection

The highly reputed international Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) program was initiated by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability in the early 1990s. CCP focuses on the greenhouse gas emissions that local governments contribute to global warming directly of around 1–2% and their indirect influence and leverage over 50% of emissions from their communities.

Energy, waste and transport are the foci for inventories and forecasts, reduction goals, action planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting. The business case is based upon reduced carbon emissions, returned savings and identified short- and medium-term payback investments.

What's New?

  • New for 2010/11 Cities for Climate Protection – Integrated Action: Cities for Climate Protection – Integrated Action (CCP-IA) is our 'next generation' climate change decision-support and capacity-building framework for local government. CCP-IA focuses on two streams of action: climate change mitigation (CCP-Mitigate) and climate change adaptation (CCP-Adapt).

CCP-Mitigate delivers methods, tools and processes on local greenhouse gas emissions reduction. Using the CCP-Mitigate process, councils can analyse their local sources of greenhouse gas emissions and strategically implement projects to reduce their contribution to global warming.

CCP-Adapt develops local government capabilities for addressing the impacts of climate change at council and community levels. CCP-Adapt uses a strategic risk and opportunities management framework tailored to address climate change.
